Acer palmatumJapanese maple. To quote from Wikipedia: "Even in nature, Acer palmatum displays considerable genetic variation, with seedlings from the same parent tree typically showing differences in such traits as leaf size, shape, and color." Thus, I'm at sea when it comes to assigning a cultivar name to this specimen. The twig was taken from a tree in a private garden in Berkeley, CA

2011-10-23 Lower Austria, district Melk - Ysperklamm (740 msm Quadrant 7656/3).German name: Spitz-Ahorn + Berg-AhornUsually - at this altitude, in ravine forests like this one - Acer pseudoplatanus should dominate, here however Acer platanoides is more common than the former: the latter needs warmer climate and usually only would dominate at lower altitudes. The reason for this might be that the valley is orientated to the south, and thus provides for a warmer micro-climate fitting for Acer platanoides.
