Phormium tenax is a species of perennial herb in the family Asphodelaceae. They have a self-supporting growth form. They are native to Norfolk Island and New Zealand. They have simple, broad leaves and capsule fruit. Flowers are visited by Acridotheres tristis, Prosthemadera novaeseelandiae, Anthornis melanura, and Zosterops lateralis. Individuals can grow to 2.5 m.
