a hoverfly - Epistrophe eligans - on a redcurrant leaf. the combination of a single solid yellow band above a solid black area on the abdomen is distinctive

This one really surprised me. What amazing colours it has. It is a Syrphid because it has an extra vein. ID: "Austalis pulchella" Thanks Tony D.Photos: Jean

This pretty little syrphid,
Temnostoma balyras (about 10-12 mm length), was buzzing about a rotting log in my back yard. Larvae live in rotting wood, and I think this was a male in search of females. This was a new species for BugGuide--ID on the
BugGuide posting. Members of this genus are difficult to identify to species level, but the fly experts on BugGuide believe I caught the relevant marks for this one. Here you can see the fly holding a dark foreleg out in front--thought to mimic the dark antennae of wasps. HFDF!

Teuchocnemis bacuntius, a beautiful wasp mimic I've not seen before. This presumed male was staked out for some time next to a rotting stump. I looked for it on subsequent days, but it did not reappear.
-
Eristalis dimidiata, a very dark individual--many have some one or two yellow stripes on the abdomen. This is an
Eristalis one sees during cool weather in the fall, as well as pretty early in spring, according to references. (I can only recall finding it in the fall, when it is quite common in my area.) It is heftier than the yellow-and-black
Eristalis transversa in the adjacent photo.
