If this is what it is, it's a good record, very rare for Essex and not recorded in Hertfordshire.

Bovingdon and Gadesprings - Field Trip - 19/05/14Roger, Steve and I made a trip to Bovingdon for some late Spring and early Summer species and boy were we in for a treat! We first trapped this site last year on the 11th of June (Trip report HERE)This time though we were simply overwhelmed with species coming in faster than one could jot down.Interestingly we caught most species that we caught last year but as a comparison, we are about 6 weeks ahead of last year (because of the cold Winter of 2012/13)Of course last year was abnormal so we could not go on last years records too much, some of the species that we did get were typically 2 weeks earlier than the books state. The evening was perfect, with a mild muggy feel about it and still 20 degrees at 8pm, the cloud was still with us and the moon stayed at bay (at least until we packed up)The threat of rain seemed to have subsided and the breeze had dropped so we were very lucky indeed. We did not get our target species Light Feathered Rustic, but it needn't have mattered as it was a long shot anyway and there was plenty of interest coming to all four traps as we worked them throughout the night.Highlights included an Alder Moth, Buttoned Snout, Seraphim, Clay Triple-lines, Grass Rivulet and Coronet. The smaller moths were also in abundance, particularly around the twin Actinic trap and several were taken away to examine in natural light.Highlights of the micros included Bucculatrix nigricomella, Mompha lacteella, Mompha raschkiella, Strophedra weirana and Platyptilia gonodactyla, 3 of those new to me.We also managed to get an unusual looking Treble Lines of the form obscura. It really was so nice to see good numbers of the common species as well with 30+ Clouded Silver, 40+ of Red Twin-spot Carpet and Mottled/Common Pug both numbering easily in excess of 25 specimens each.Exhausted as we had finished around 1am at this site, then onto Gadesprings to empty the two traps there, where we found another 3 Alder Moths, Figure of Eighty and Light Brocade amongst a reasonable amount of species.Home at 3am, up at 6am and I felt like I had a hangover this morning, all good fun!Numbers below are as close as I could record! Bits and bobs from Back garden and Parents farm Just a quick update, had a walk around the garden and also the farm and found some more new species for the year. I am struggling with the 2 Mompha species found in my garden, they are probably just Mompha subbistrigella, but one is very colourful for that particular species. I shall be back up there tonight with the Herts moth group. 06-06-13 - Braughing Farmland - Daytime netting 1x Crambus lathoniellus 2x Silver-ground Carpet 7x Cinnabar 1x Epiblema costipunctana 2x Epiblema cirsiana 10x Nettle-tap Anthophila fabriciana 1x Mompha epilobiella 07-06-13 - Back garden - Daytime 1x Argyresthia trifasciata [NFG] 2x Mompha sp [NFG] 1x Angle Shades

What a night! With the MV Robinson Trap back in action, it was time to see what graced the trap come Monday morning.I was pretty darned pleased to say the least, there were literally loads of moths.Unfortunately the birds still beat me to a few of the bigger moths. I got up at 6 to find a year first Swallow-tailed Moth wings, but luckily the best was in the trap! Nearly 200 moths last night with 22 New species for the year...probably a record catch for the garden.Again mostly micros but it was certainly a Wave night with Small Dusty, Common White, Riband, Small Fan-footed, Dwarf Cream, Treble Brown Spot and Single-dotted Wave!Elephant Hawk-moth, Haworths Pug, Dingy Shears and Epagoge grotiana were pick of the bunch. But best of all, both of the micros Argyresthia cupressella and Swammerdamia caesiella were new ones for me. Argyresthia cupressella if correct will be the 4th County record for Hertfordshire. All these new ones suddenly sees me at 240 species for the year though still some way to beat 385 species I had last year, still things are still possible as out of the 240 species so far this year an amazing 36 species have been new for the garden I had a night off last night as it had teamed it down for a few hours before darkness and the vegetation was sopping.Catch Report - 21/06/14 - Back Garden Stevenage - 1x 160w MBT Robinson TrapMacro Moths1x Common Emerald [NFY]1x Swallow-tailed Moth [NFY]1x Haworth's Pug [NFY]1x Light Arches [NFY]1x Elephant Hawk-moth [NFY]1x Dingy Shears [NFY]2x Barred Yellow [NFY]1x Small Fan-footed Wave [NFY]1x Single-dotted Wave [NFY]1x Clay [NFY]3x Marbled Minor2x Dwarf Cream Wave1x Small Dusty Wave7x Treble Brown Spot5x Dark Arches 2x Willow Beauty2x Common White Wave1x Common Pug2x Green Pug 2x Buff-tip1x Buff Ermine1x Beautiful Hook-tip1x Common Wainscot 1x Flame1x Cabbage Moth1x Double-striped Pug2x Peppered Moth 2x Grey Pug 6x Common Footman 3x Flame Shoulder 1x Bright-line Brown-eye 2x Heart & Club 2x Fan-foot 3x Dot Moth 1x Brimstone 22x Uncertain 6x Mottled Beauty 3x Riband Wave 4x Light Emerald 4x Double Square-spot 29x Heart & Dart 19x Mottled Rustic1x Vine's Rustic1x SnoutMicro Moths 1x Argyresthia cupressella [NEW!]1x Swammerdamia caesiella [NEW!] 2x Scythropia crataegella [NFG]1x Ancylis achatana [NFG]1x Argyresthia goedartella [NFY] 1x Yponomeuta evonymella [NFY]1x Carcina quercana [NFY]2x Oegoconia sp [NFY] 1x Epagoge grotiana [NFY]1x Hypsopygia costalis [NFY]1x Pterophorus pentadactyla [NFY]1x Argyresthia pruniella [NFY]3x Phycita roborella1x Phyllonorycter coryli 2x Udea prunalis1x Agapeta hamana1x Endotricha flammealis1x Coleophora sp 5x Udea olivalis 3x Aphomia sociella 7x Aleimma loeflingiana 3x Tortrix viridana15x Chrysoteuchia culmella 2x Ditula angustiorana 1x Eurrhypara hortulata3x Hedya pruniana1x Celypha striana 3x Epiblema uddmanniana 2x Celypha lacunana1x Archips podana 5x Scoparia ambigualis2x Epiphyas postvittana1x Dipleurina lacustrata4x Emmelina monodactyla

David, Roger, Steve and myself tried a session trapping on the Westbrook Hay site consisting of unimproved grassland and surrounding ancient woodland. We parked up and intended to run a few traps from the Old Barn electrics and then walk with a few traps and the genny to somewhere towards Ramacre Wood, overlooking Hay Wood as well. Unfortunately the electric sockets in the Old Barn did not work (although strangely all the lights did) so after setting up two traps and laying 100 metres of cable to find they wouldn't work, we had to pack it all up and go to plan B, take all but one of the traps with us alongside the bridlepath leading to Ramacre Wood. This part of Westbrook Hay has been previously untrapped, unfortunately it was very humid (good for moths) and we were plagued by Horse-flies, well I was! One got the tip of my index finger but I got off lightly luckily. Not to be put off anymore, as soon as I pulled the cord on the generator the wind got up! You couldn't make it up!Luckily the wind was on and off, but when it was on it was blowing quite considerably. I thought we should put a trap on the bridlepath shielded from the wind, and this trap did pretty well indeed. All in all a great trip marred by a few niggles, you can't have it all I suppose. The catch was mainly made up of Middle-barred Minor, Straw Dot, Tortrix viridana, Pseudargyrotoza conwagana, Aleimma loeflingiana and Chrysoteuchia culmella. Highlights were Green Arches, White-point, Phlyctaenia perlucidalis, Alabonia geoffrella and Archips crataegana.Stenoptilia pterodactyla was potted up in my car, it must have still been in one of the traps as we were loading them in. Identified by its white costal streak. A Gem of a new moth! + another new MicroOn Wednesday night, I set-up the trap for the last time until Sunday night, as we are currently having a lovely weekend away.Although it rained most of the night and the trap was full of wasps come the morning...it was all very much worth it, with my first ever UK Gem, I was so excited to get this moth and am astonished how it got past all of the town and factory lights to end up in the bottom of my trap. The new Micro was Stenolechia gemmella, thinking it was initially a Carpatolechia species, it turned out to be this pretty species.

A new moth for meSome better catches last week in the garden, and some nice surprises as well kept the interest up somewhat. On Monday night the weather was relatively mild in the evening and seemed like a good night to try for a few moths.Mottled Umber was new for the year, Brick had a great flurry with 3 individuals (not a common moth for me) and late mots continued to fly including Shuttle-shaped Dart and Carcina quercana.Bedellia somnulentella was a completely new moth for me, a Bindweed leaf-miner, and one I intially dis-regarded as a Caloptilia. On Thursday it was mild again and by Friday moning a whole host of interesting moths graced the trap, Buff Footman was my latest ever record, and Orange Sallow was another garden first (albeit very worn)Lovely forms of Acleris sparsana and Chestnut were nice to photograph. Two garden firsts in one week was definitely a reason to feel like it was all worth it.Catch Report - 20/10/14 - Back Garden - Stevenage - 1x 125w MV Robinson TrapMacro Moths 1x Mottled Umber [NFY]1x Grey-pine Carpet1x Red-line Quaker1x Common Marbled Carpet3x Brick1x Willow Beauty1x Chestnut 1x Feathered Thorn1x Barred Sallow1x Shuttle-shaped Dart Micro Moths1x Bedellia somnulentela [NEW!]1x Acleris sparsana1x Carcina quercana2x Epiphyas postvittana1x Plutella xylostellaCatch Report - 23/10/14 - Back Garden - Stevenage - 1x 125w MV Robinson TrapMacro Moths1x Orange Sallow [NFG]1x Red-green Carpet3x November Moth sp1x Buff Footman1x Red-line Quaker3x Green-brindled Crescent1x Common Marbled Carpet2x Barred Sallow1x Chestnut2x Lesser Yellow Underwing2x SatelliteMicro Moths3x Epiphyas postvittana2x Acleris schalleriana1x Emmelina monodactyla

Catch Report - Braughing 18/07/12 - 1x 125w MV Robinson TrapWell it seems like ages since I last trapped in the garden! was nice to get a mid-July list anyway. Riband Wave is really down in numbers this year with just one in the trap this morning, this time of year usually it would be the commonest moth in the trap! but so far just singletons. Also where has Straw Dot got to? hmmm one I trap commonly amongst the grassland on the farm. Really pleased with a stunning Old Lady, the best conditioned one I have ever seen, she was sitting on the side of the trap. The best Micro Moth of the night was a new one for me Apotomis capreana. Garden first Eyed Hawk meets it's peril :(A very pleasing night with good night time temperatures and plenty of cloud cover. Unfortunately it did rain during the night, and this morning it was drizzling a little.Still I was rewarded with a garden first Eyed Hawk-moth, unfortunately a Garden Spider had got to it before me and had already delivered the fatal bite :( Puss moth was also new, after rearing 3 Males recently, this one was a female and another garden first, delighted!Stigmella aurella was certainly the smallest moth in the catch, a moth I recorded earlier on in the year as a tenanted mine within Brambles at the back of the garden. Also Pseudoswammerdamia combinella was a good new micro for the garden, and despite letting go one from last weeks catch at Roughdown Common, thinking this was initially the same individual....after a photo of the same side it clearly has different markings.Catch Report - 05/05/14 - Back Garden Stevenage - 1x 125w MV Robinson TrapMacro Moths1x Eyed Hawk-moth [NFG]1x Puss Moth (F) [NFG]1x Orange Footman [NFY]2x Red-green Carpet [NFY]1x Buff-tip [NFY]1x Spruce Carpet 2x Brindled Pug1x Flame Shoulder1x Nut-tree Tussock2x Brimstone Moth3x Shuttle-shaped DartMicro Moths 1x Pseudoswammerdamia combinella [NFG]1x Syndemis musculana [NFY]1x Argyrotaenia ljungiana [NFY]1x Stigmella aurella1x Agonopterix purpurea1x Endrosis sarcitrella1x Epiphyas postvittana

Moths galore!Well things have all of a sudden picked up here in my garden with a huge selection ofspecies and after a high of 27c the night was clear, but boy did it stay warm at aminimum of 15c even under clear skies, the moths were everywhere this morning andno doubt I missed a few.I don't normally run the trap at the weekend, but after going for a walk for morefood for our caterpillars and seeing so much flying about, I am glad I did!Best Macro moths for me were garden first's of Red-necked Footman and Lobster Moth. Also both Toadflax and Foxglove Pug in one night was a surprise, another two new ones forthe garden, all in all 24 were new for the garden and were 4 new for the year.2 examples of the tiny little Ectoedemia decentella and a single Argyresthia retinellawere both new moths for me, well chuffed!Interestingly the only species of Hawk-moth I have had in my garden since last August has beenthe Poplar Hawk-moth, where at my last house I recorded Lime, Eyed, Poplar, Privet, Elephantand Pine on an annual basis.213 moths of 87 species total (51 Macro - 36 Micro) Catch Report - 06/07/13 - Back Garden Stevenage - 1x 125w MV Robinson trapMacro Moths1x Red-necked Footman [NFG]1x Lobster Moth [NFG]1x Fan-foot [NFG]1x Foxglove Pug [NFG]1x Toadflax Pug [NFG]1x Small Blood-vein [NFG]1x Miller [NFG]1x Buff Ermine [NFG]1x Fern [NFG]1x Buff Arches [NFG]1x Maiden's Blush [NFY]4x Treble Brown-spot1x Grey Pug4x Common Footman5x Brimstone Moth4x Willow Beauty2x Maple Prominent3x Flame Shoulder2x Flame4x Dot Moth2x Green Silver-lines3x Peppered Moth3x Mottled Beauty3x Treble Brown Spot2x Pale Prominent2x Common Marbled Carpet25x Uncertain3x Heart & Club1x Light Emerald3x Barred Yellow3x Snout1x Large Yellow Underwing2x Marbled Minor1x Ingrailed Clay1x Brown Rustic1x Pale Mottled Willow21x Heart & Dart1x Rustic Shoulder-knot5x Mottled Rustic3x Dark Arches1x Garden Carpet1x Freyer's Pug1x Spectacle7x Double Square-spot1x Green Pug1x Grey Dagger1x Beautiful Golden-Y3x Straw Dot1x Angle Shades2x Bright-line Brown-eye1x Common Pug Micro Moths2x Ectoedemia decentella [NEW!]1x Epiblema uddmanniana [NFG]1x Argyresthia retinella [NEW!]1x Aphelia paleana [NFG]1x Anthophila fabriciana [NFG]1x Epiblema cirsiana (hindwing dark 'checked') [NFG]2x Hedya nubiferana [NFG]1x Ephestia parasitella [NFG]1x Epiblema trimaculana [NFG]1x Pammene aurana [NFG]1x Archips podana [NFG]1x Archips xylosteana [NFG]1x Crambus pascuella [NFG]1x Trachycera suavella [NFG]1x Coleophora sp [NFY]1x Tinea semifulvella [NFY]1x Spilonota ocellana [NFY]3x Udea olivalis2x Celypha lacunana3x Dipleurina lacustrata1x Scoparia ambigualis1x Amblyptilia acanthadactyla2x Celypha striana1x Emmelina monodactyla6x Aleimma loeflingiana8x Tortrix viridana1x Aphomia sociella1x Eurrhypara hortulata1x Bryotropha terrella6x Epiphyas postvittana3x Chrysoteuchia culmella1x Hedya pruniana2x Argyresthia spinosella3x Pandemis cerasana2x Crambus lathoniellus1x Caloptilia alchimiella
