Polycheira rufescens (Brandt 1835)

Habitat: Found buried in sand in the upper balanoid zone, ususally associated with Patinapta crosslandi Heding and the echiuran Ochetostoma caudex (Lampert) (Thandar, 1989). According to Clark, P. rufescens is very variable in colour, ranging from pale brown or purplish to red brown, deep brown, tending to be almost balck (Thandar, 1989). General distribution: from the East Coast of Africa, up to South Africa to Easter Island and from Korea to Norhtern Australia and Fiji (Massin, 1996); from East Africa to Polynesia (Tortonese, 1980); tropical, Indo-west Pacific Ocean, shallow waters (Rowe & Gates, 1995). Also distributed in Ceylon, Bay of Bengal, East Indies, north Australia, Philippine, China, south Japan and South Pacific Is. (Rowe & Gates, 1995); Australia (Rowe & Gates, 1995). Ecology: benthic, inshore, detritus feeder, deposit feeder (Rowe & Gates, 1995).
