Cephalopod

Brief Summary

provided by EOL authors

Cephalopods (Greek: cephal- = head; -pod = foot. “head footed”) are a very successful and intelligent class of Molluscs. Cephalopods can be characterized by bilateral body symmetry and discernible muscular hydrostatic tentacles. This aquatic class of animals has evolved for some 500 million years starting in the middle Cambrian period. The cephalopods can be broken in to two farther groups: the Nautiloid (i.e. chambered nautilus) and the Coleoidea (i.e. squids, cuttlefish, octopi and vampire squids).
