This name is used for specimens of the Psora himalayana-complex with small, imbricate squamules. It may be a distinct species, but more studies are needed.
Typical specimens of P. elenkinii occur from the European side of the Ural mountains, throughout northern Asia, to the Rocky Mountains in Canada and USA.
On soil or in crevices of rock in open habitat, on more or less calcareous rock.
