描述

體延伸而細長,圓柱形。體長約為體高的61.8-64.5倍,頭長之22.9-23.8倍;尾長為軀幹長的0.8-0.9倍;頭長為吻長的8.8倍;吻長為眼徑的1.6倍。吻尖而短。眼小而埋於皮下。前鼻孔細長而呈短管狀,後鼻孔裂縫狀,不明顯。口裂超過眼之後緣;上頜較下頜寬而長;齒細小,尖錐形,上下頜齒各為一列,排列不規則;前頜骨齒呈束狀;鋤骨齒為不規則之二列。背鰭起始於鰓裂之前(約4.7倍吻長之前);無胸鰭及尾鰭。肛門明顯位於體中央之後。福馬林標本上側黃褐色,下側較淡,背、臀鰭灰白色。

The Longtailed sand-eel[2] (Bascanichthys kirkii) is an eel in the family Ophichthidae (worm/snake eels).[3] It was described by Albert Günther in 1870, originally under the genus Ophichthys.[4] It is a marine, tropical eel, which is known from Aden to Natal, South Africa, in the western Indian Ocean. Males can reach a maximum total length of 54 centimetres (21 in).[3]
