Therochaetella

Description

provided by NMNH Antarctic Invertebrates

"Genus Therochaetella, new genus
Type Therochaetella chilensis, new species

The body grossly resembles that of species of Pherusa Oken in being long, tapering posteriorly, having a cephalic cage ; the surface is encrusted with sand. The first three or four parapodial lobes are prolonged, and their parapodia have long, barred, distally pointed setae which form a cage. Notosetae are entirely simple, long, distally pointed, and transversely barred. Neurosetae of anterior segments resemble notosetae. In middle and posterior segments neurosetae are falcate, entire, with bifid tip. The oral apparatus resembles that of Therochaeta collarifera (Ehlers) (see Hartman, 1965, pl. 40) ; a long, cylindrical tube, distally crenulated, encloses the prostomial parts and branchiae.

Therochaetella differs from Therochaeta Chamberlin, 1919, in having many pairs of branchiae ; composite setae are absent ; neurosetae are distally bifid ; the cephalic region is not collarlike."
