West shore of Pittwater (northern outskirts of Sydney), New South Wales. This is a wide-ranging and extraordinarily variable species in eastern Australia. It can be a mat of fine foliage under 5 cm high or a slender tuft up to almost 0.5 m. Leaves vary fom half a millimetre in width to almost 10 mm. What holds them together are the flower and inflorescence characters. In my work on vegetation surveys there are few more frequently encountered plants.

A pretty reedy plant mostly overlooked. It has delightful little ball flowers. A photo from the archives for my own information and ease of access to find it.

Lomandra hermaphrodita flowerFor
Beth and
Ron. I have been looking for flowers on these plants for the last twelve months even though I know they flower between April and June. It was quite a surprise to find these at the end of the day.The plants of these are dioecious (separate male and female plants) This has pollen showing between the petals, so I am thinking this is a male plant. Now I have to find a female. 8-4-2011 Lomandra flowersMale flowers have 6 stamens with a reduced ovaryFemale flowers have 6 sterile and reduced stamens and a prominent ovary

The Lomandra are starting to flower. These dark ones seem to like to grow in the shadows which help hide them. They are rather pretty when you stop to look at them.

Blue Mountains National Park west of Sydney, New South Wales. Woodford Range about 2 km south of park entrance gate at Glenbrook. This is the only Lomandra species, at least in south-eastern Australia, with very short leaves arranged in 2 rows on an elongated aerial stem. The male and female inflorescences are quite different. Plants are dioecious, as for all Lomandras.

Lomandra hermaphroditaA delightful small plant that is easily overlooked despite its curly wurly leaves. It flowers between April and June so I will keep my eyes open for them. Possibly a flower from
