Eristalis dimidiata, a very dark individual--many have some one or two yellow stripes on the abdomen. This is an Eristalis one sees during cool weather in the fall, as well as pretty early in spring, according to references. (I can only recall finding it in the fall, when it is quite common in my area.) It is heftier than the yellow-and-black Eristalis transversa in the adjacent photo.
This is the most widely distributed hoverfly - Syrphid in the world. It is migratory and fits in anywhere. They visit our place occasionally and this is the first to visit this year, so we followed it around the garden.
Eristalis transversa, a brightly-colored Eristalis. In my area this does not seem to be as common as the similar, but darker and larger, Eristalis dimidiata--adjacent photo.
