Seagrasses are fully marine angiosperms (flowering plants). Seagrass beds only occur in the shallow water photic zone. The lower part of this photo shows a cross-section through a root system of a Thalassia seagrass bed. The root system is dominated by subvertical, cylindrical rhizomes that can reach down to 80 cm below the sediment-water interface. Individual rhizomes can be up to 2 cm in diameter. Subhorizontal and other non-vertically oriented rhizomes are present, but less prominent. Classification: Plantae, Angiospermophyta, Najadales, Hydrocharitaceae Locality: South Pigeon Creek estuary, southeastern San Salvador Island, eastern Bahamas Some info. from: Glumac & Curran (2012) - Documentation of extensive root systems of Thalassia seagrass along the banks of Pigeon Creek, San Salvador Island, Bahamas.
