Chlosyne califonica is resident to the Western United States up into southern British Columbia, and some populations carry out spectacular migrations in several non-overwintering flights, some as far as New York (Scott 1986). Habitats are transition to Hudsonian zone chaparral and woodland. Host plants are shrubs, restricted to one genus, Ceanothus (Rhamnaceae). Eggs are laid on the host plant in clusters. Individuals overwinter as adults. There are multiple flights each year depending on latitude and population with flight times between Mar.1 and Oct 31 (Scott 1986).

Adults feed on nectar and mud. Males perch for females (Scott, 1986).
