Gaya is a genus of flowering plants belonging to the family Malvaceae. It has been classed in the Malvoideae subfamily and the Malveae tribe.[3]
It is native to Tropical America with its greatest diversity in Brazil (up to 14 species). It is also found in the countries of Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Leeward Is., Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.[2]
Shrubs or herbs, with toothed leaves, flowers either yellowish or purplish, mainly solitary in the axils, sometimes racemose, with 8 carpels or more, membranaceous, bi-valvate and one seeded.[4]
The genus name of Gaya is in honour of Jaques Étienne Gay (1786–1864), a Swiss-French botanist, civil servant, collector and taxonomist.[5] It was first described and published in (F.W.H.von Humboldt, A.J.A.Bonpland & C.S.Kunth; Editors), Nov. Gen. Sp. Vol.5 on page 266 in 1823.[2]

Son hierbas o sufrútices puberulentos, a veces también pilosos. Hojas a veces dísticas, ovadas hasta oblongas, agudas, cordadas, crenadas hasta subenteras. Pedicelos solitarios en las axilas, las flores a veces péndulas; calículo ausente; cáliz redondeado en la base, sin nervios prominentes; pétalos amarillos. Frutos subglobosos o anchamente subcónicos, carpidios 8–30, dehiscentes; semillas 1 por carpidio, rodeadas por una endoglosa pectinada (proyección lingüiforme que abraza a la semilla dentro del carpidio).[1]
El género fue descrito por Carl Sigismund Kunth y publicado en Nova Genera et Species Plantarum (quarto ed.) 5: 209 - 260, en el año 1821.
La especie tipo es Gaya hermannioides Kunth.[1]

Карл Кунт в 1822 году назвал род Gaya в честь французского ботаника Жака Ге (1786—1864). Также под этим названием описывались два других рода — Gaya Gaudin и Gaya Spreng.. Первый из них включён в синонимику рода Pachypleurum Ledeb., второй — гомотипный синоним закреплённого названия Seringia J.Gay.
В род входят многолетние травянистые растения и небольшие кустарники. Все части растений опушены, чем этот род близок к Sida. Листья цельные, с сердцевидной пластинкой, на черешках. Цветки одиночные или собранные на концах побегов в кистевидные соцветия, венчик у многих видов окрашен в жёлтые тона. Прицветники отсутствуют. Плодолистики плёнчатые, сросшиеся, двудольные.
Представители рода Gaya широко распространены в Южной Америке. Один вид заходит на север в Центральную Америку.
Типовой вид рода, Gaya hermannioides, иногда включается в синонимику Gaya calyptrata.
