Closterium striolatum EHRENB. var. rectum (W.WEST) WILLI KRIEG. Unlike the type variety of species Closterium striolatum cells are straight, slendering in the direction of wide rounded apices. In the middle part cellwalls run parallel converging steadily to the apices. The cellwall varies from colorless to pale brown and is clearly striated. Dimension: Length 250 400 µm, width 25 30 µm.Ecology: Only few habitats are known hitherto. Though the habitat Klafferkessel (Lower Tauern) proves that this variety isnt an abnormality. Its rare but a persistent form.Copyright by Prof. Rupert Lenzenweger, Ried im Innkreis, Austria. Place name: n. a. Closterium striolatum This desmid is characterized by ribbed structure of cell wall, especially at the terminal calottes. Over 20 pictures were taken using 63/1.4 objective and DIC and were combine manually (stitching and stacking). The picture shows precisely the surface structure of Closterium striolatum, i. e. the longitudinal and transversal stripes. Each of the latter indicates a vegetative cell division, 11 divisions in this case. The scale bar indicates 25 µm. Sample from sphagnum pond situated in the northern alpine region of Austria near Salzburg. Images were taken using Zeiss Universal with Olympus C7070 CCD camera.Image under Creative Commons License V 3.0 (CC BY-NC-SA). Closterium striolatum Unicellar desmid with two chloroplasts which show stellate shape in cross-section. The inset shows the delicate surface texture of cell wall surface in high resolution (Planapochromat 63/1.4). The usually seen longitudinal stripes are not yet developed. Every binary fission marks a cross line on the cell wall. The single crossline indicates that this cell underwent only one (its first) binary fission after developing from a zygote. This picture was built up using 38 DIC frames with manual stacking technique. Sample from sphagnum pond situated in the northern alpine region of Austria near Salzburg. Images were taken using Zeiss Universal with Olympus C7070 CCD camera.Image under Creative Commons License V 3.0 (CC BY-NC-SA). Closterium striolatum In this image the focal plane is approximately in the middle of the cell. Shown are the vacuoles at the cell ends with crystals of barium sulfate with traces of strontium, calcium and radium. The circular greenish structures are pyrenoid bodies in which the storage substance starch is produced and deposited as a shell. The nucleus is located in the middle of the cell. Scale bar indicates 50 µm. Sample from wetland Lauchseemoor, Fieberbrunn, Tyrol, Austria. Sampling date 06/2023.
