“Plants violet in color, becoming very dark when dry, unstalked, unbranched, (5-)8.0-14.8 cm long, 0.69-0.93(-1.5) mm in diameter, distinctly narrowed at the base, straight or slightly arcuate. Spermatangial zones or fertile portions prominent, papillae in nodal rings, broad, irregular, sometimes interrupted near base. Carposporophyte zones nearly cylindrical. Carpogonium-bearing branch in middle of carposporophyte zone.
Chantransia phase in tufts; branches attenuated at base, alternate, sometimes unilateral above, shaped like an artist’s brush.”
