Canotia holacantha Torr. Pacif. R. R. Rep. 4 : 68. 1857
Usually a shrub about 3 meters high, but sometimes a tree up to 10 meters high ; sepals about 1 mm. long; petals and stamens about 5 mm. long; capsules, including the beak, about 2.5 cm. long, 1 cm. thick.
Type locality: Hills bordering Bill Williams Fork, Arizona.
Distribution : Southern Arizona and adjacent California.
