Much-branched perennial herb with more or less procumbent stems, usually less than c. 30 cm long. Leaves opposite, shortly petiolate to subsessile, variable in shape, ovate, elliptic-oblong or obovate, up to 15 × 8 mm, with dark gland dots around the margin; apex rounded; margin entire. Flowers c. 1.5-2 cm in diameter, in terminal clusters; sepals obovate or oblong, rounded at the apex, unequal, with translucent and dark gland dots; petals pale to bright yellow with dark gland dots on margins only; stamens c. 25-30 numerous; styles usually 3-4. Fruit a capsule, usually erect. See the similar H. aethiopicum and H. peplidifolium for comparison.
