Specimens of Platyschkuhria integrifolia with stems leafy over 3/4+ of their lengths have been called var. oblongifolia (mostly from "four-corners" area of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah). Those with leaves mostly on proximal 1/10–3/4 their stem lengths, peduncles little or not at all stipitate-glandular, and phyllary tips ± caudate have been called var. ourolepis (mostly from Uinta Basin, Utah). Those with leaves mostly on proximal 1/10–3/4 their stem lengths, leaf blades widest beyond their middles and rounded at tips, peduncles ± stipitate-glandular, and phyllary tips acute to acuminate have been called var. nudicaulis (mostly from Montana and Wyoming). Those with leaves mostly on proximal 1/10–3/4 their stem lengths, leaf blades widest proximal to their middles and acute at tips, peduncles ± stipitate-glandular, and phyllary tips obtuse to acute or acuminate have been called var. desertorum (mostly from western Colorado and eastern Utah).

Leaf blades 2–10 cm × 5–35+ mm. Involucres 9–12+ × 12–25+ mm. Ray corolla laminae 6–16 mm. Disc corollas 3–6(–7) mm. Cypselae (1–)3–5(–8) mm; pappi 0.6–3+ mm. 2n = 24, 48, 60, 72.

A low perennial with woody caudex; stem about 2 dm. high, canescent-puberulent, leafy;
leaves alternate, petioled or the uppermost sessile; blades oblong or elliptic, thick, puberulent,
triple-ribbed, 3-5 cm. long; heads mostly 3, corymbose; involucre hemispheric, 8-9 mm.
high, about 1 cm. broad; bracts oblong or elliptic, obtuse, puberulent; ligules about 10,
oblong, 1 cm. long; disk-flowers many; corollas about 5 mm. long; tube glandular, shorter
than the throat; achenes elongate-obconic, 3 mm. long, less pubescent; squamellae 10-12,
narrowly lanceolate, 3 mm. long.
Type locality: Dry hills, Valley of San Juan, Utah or New Mexico. Distribution: Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona.

A perennial with a thick woody caudex; stem leafy mostly at the base, 1.5-3 dm. high, canescent and more or less glandular, especially above; lower leaves petioled, crowded; blades oval or ovate, triple-ribbed, entire, 2-8 cm. long, canescent-hirsutulous, thick; upper stemleaves much reduced, oblanceolate to linear; heads 1-9, corymbose; peduncles 3-7 cm. long; involucre hemispheric, about 1 cm. high, 15-18 mm. broad; bracts lanceolate or oblanceolate, acute or abruptly acuminate, glandular-puberulent ; ligules 10-12, oblong, about 1 cm. long; disk-flowers man}-; corolla about 6 mm. long; tube glandular, shorter than the cylindrocampanulate throat; achenes oblong-obpyramidal, 4 mm. long, striate, hirsute throughout; pappus-squameUae 12-15, lanceolate, 2 mm. long.
