體細長,如鰻形,側扁。頭小,眼大。鰓條骨7。體表光滑不具鱗片。側線非常明顯具管狀的特化鱗片。背鰭和臀鰭位於身體的中後端靠近尾柄的位置,臀鰭基底長於背鰭基底,背鰭起點在臀鰭起點後方,各鰭均無硬棘,背鰭軟條45-50,臀鰭軟條65-69;腹鰭小,稍位於臀鰭前方;尾鰭截形且和備齊以及臀鰭相連。體色為深褐色至黑色,頭部顏色略深。
棲地
