體細長，如鰻形，側扁。頭小，眼大。鰓條骨7。體表光滑不具鱗片。側線非常明顯具管狀的特化鱗片。背鰭和臀鰭位於身體的中後端靠近尾柄的位置，臀鰭基底長於背鰭基底，背鰭起點在臀鰭起點後方，各鰭均無硬棘，背鰭軟條45-50，臀鰭軟條65-69；腹鰭小，稍位於臀鰭前方；尾鰭截形且和備齊以及臀鰭相連。體色為深褐色至黑色，頭部顏色略深。
棲地
