Antephyra limacis

Description

provided by NMNH Antarctic Invertebrates

Antephrya limacis sp. nov.
Figs. 12I-12M

Diagnosis. Same as that for the genus.

Etymology. The name of the species limacis means slug, referring to the sluglike form of the species.

Type locality. 25-352, 55°31'S, 126°28'W; 55°36'S, 126°01'W; October 29, 1966; 1155 m; one female, 2.3 mm long.

Distribution. Known only from type locality.

Remarks. The species lacks the posterior two pairs of peraeopods, and the remaining five pairs are crowded together in a small ventral area situated in the anterior portion of the animal, so that it is here considered to be in the family Dajidae. However, in some ways it resembles Cyproniscus cypridinae Sars [see Sars, 1899, p. 233, pls. 97-98]. That species is in the Cryptoniscidae, and so the life history stages, now unknown, of the new species must be revealed for correct placement of the species.”
