Calliotropis lateumbilicata Dell 1990

Description

provided by NMNH Antarctic Invertebrates

"Calliotropis (Solaricida) lateumbilicata n.sp. (Figs 138, 139, 140)

MATERIAL EXAMINED: Eltanin Stn 1926.

DISTRIBUTION: Known only from the Ross Sea in 2143-2154 m.

DESCRIPTION: Shell larger than C. antarctica, but basically very similar. Axial sculpture on the shoulder developed to the same degree as over the rest of the shell surface. Axial lamellae cross the spiral cords but hardly render them nodulous, so cords appear much less prominent. Two additional cords are developed on the shoulder, including on spire whorls; five spiral cords on base. Spire more depressed than in C. antarctica. Umbilicus very wide, extremely open.

MEASUREMENTS: See Table 4.

HOLOTYPE: from Eltanin Stn 1926 in National Museum of Natural History (USNM 860090).

REMARKS: Although C. lateumbilicata is obviously closely related to C. antarctica, the sculptural differences noted in the description and the much wider umbilicus in the former separate the two very clearly."
