Known as "horse hair fungus" or "horse hair blight". Its mycelia form cords which are aerial, extending between branches and leaves in trees, forming a tangled mass. The cords are "smooth, tough, black... from one-tenth to one-eighth of a millimetre in diameter". Other Marasmius species also have the "horse hair" habit.
