This is unusual in that the flower stock sprouts from the ground. Found in the westernmost Amazon Basin. Here in Colombia it is known as Caabre and it used for coughs.

This flower was snapped at the Singapore Zoo.According to Jana Leong-Skornickova & Dina Gallick, the authors of The Ginger Garden, "Crepe Ginger is perhaps the most common spiral ginger naturalised throughout the tropics...Its rhizomes are used in Asia as a traditional medicine to treat intestinal worm infections and to reduce fever."
