Herbs or subshrubs, mostly epiphytic, less often terrestrial. Leaves usually stiff, numerous, overlapping, borne in rosettes, sometimes saw-toothed..
Flowers mostly actinomorphic and bisexual. Inflorescence a raceme, spike, head or branched panicle.
Sepals 3; petals 3; each sometimes with ligules or scales at the base. Stamens 6. Ovary superior or inferior, 3-locular; ovules many. Fruit a berry or capsule.
