Summary[
edit] DescriptionAPI Dead...but it counts Yesterday whilst mooching around the garden and mowing the lawn, I came across another Epermenia chaerophyllella the third for the year. Back in the house and my better half said that there was a grey shiny moth in the en suite, it wasn't moving. It turned out to be a damn Endrosis sarcitrella, not a nice find in one's house! O well it becomes the 62nd specie for the year. Trapping again tonight hopefully... Date 26 April 2014, 12:29 Source

Summary[
edit] DescriptionAPI Two more day-fliers Another duo of year first Micro's found flying in the garden this evening. Interestingly I have found that the best way to find them is to water the garden with a watering can, thus disturbing them and quickly potting them up. The Phyllonorycter is Phyllonorycter coryli, narrowed down by several Hazel leaves I found last year in the garden, some of which had exited mines in them, a first in adult form for the garden. The other micro was Epermenia chaerophyllella, a moth I caught once last year. Trapping tonight after a few cold nights off, at the moment we have cloud cover! Date 17 April 2014, 17:42 Source

Summary[
edit] DescriptionAPI The onslaught slows down somewhat A more relaxed catch this morning with less hustle and bustle of recent times. Temperatures have been dropping over the past few nights to a minimum of 12c under clear skies. Cooler temps generally means less moths and it was expected after having such a long mild spell. Dot Moths and Dark Arches have gone as quickly as they have come, a similiar story to what other moth'ers are experiencing aswell. Still I can't grumble, with a few more added to the garden list. Correction, the suspected Caloptilia populetorum is in fact a Aspilapteryx tringipennella, still a garden first though and a new one for me. Summary[
edit] DescriptionAPI Poor year....but that is more like it! By recent standards, a superb selection of moths greeted me this morning at 5.30am, with 9 new for the year and 6 of them new for the garden, a grand total of 29 moths of 21 species was quite frankly overwhelming! Best moth of the night was undoubtedly Epermenia chaerophyllella which is only my second record of this rather non-descript moth. My last record was on the 3rd of April 2008 in Essex so this is my first Hertfordshire example of this supposed 'common' moth? Other than that all of the other species were to be expected. Clouded Drab was nearly my first June example..... Catch up mothing! I've had a busy last 3 weeks resulting in my blogging absense, apologies! This catch was on a windy and wet but quite mild night back on the 02nd of August and my last home trapping effort before I went away on the 8th of August to SW France. I'm glad I ran my trap actually as I was rewarded with 2 good but regular migrants for my garden, both Dark Sword-grass and White-point adding to the year list. A second Vapourer for the year was most welcome as was the unusual looking Epermenia chaerophyllella, another second example for the garden year list. Warm days, cool nights Have been preventing me from trapping regularly this week. In fact i've only tried on Monday and Thursday night this week, but hoping to fire the trap up tonight as we have had a warm day of 20 degrees again, sadly there is no cloud again. Thursday night's catch was low but quality over quantity was the order of the day, with a garden first Lunar Marbled Brown (Shame about the bald head!). And after five years of waiting! Well chuffed and surprisingly there were 9 other moths including a year first Brindled Pug in and around the trap. All of the moths came to the twin 20w Wemlite Actinic. This is a milestone for Macro Moth records in my garden as it's my 300th species so far and the 581st species of Moth recorded overall. Also the warm weather seems to have brought things out in the daytime with a Ruby Tiger spotted flying around works garden on Friday and also yesterday whilst weeding the garden, a year first Epermenia chaerophyllella was potted up. A BIG deep breath. A record-breaking night in Bedfordshire I joined Matt and Lionel at Home Wood on Monday night in Bedfordshire. The day had been absolutely scorching and hit nearly 30 degrees during the day and the night was meant to go no lower than 19/20 degrees, perfect muggy weather for moths despite clear skies we had absolutely no wind at all and no moon to contend with. We setup 5 traps and a light and sheet under sweaty conditions, it was hot stuff indeed and once again I attracted Horse-flies! As soon as it got dark, moths were absolutely everywhere with micros at first in their hundreds and then the Geometers started coming in and finally the Noctuids and boy was there action around the lights. I've been out before and had trouble with lots of midges and flies but never have I had as much trouble from inhaling moths as well. The species kept tallying up and it was hard to keep up. We got to 100 species about 2 hours in and then from midnight it was about 1 or 2 a minute being jotted down. Highlights were massively over-whelming with two County first species to start with....Rosy Marbled and Elegia similella. Copied from Andy Banthorpe's email. Gen Dets of species retained so far. Carpatolechia fugitivella m & f â been recorded there before Carpatolechia notatella f â 3rd county record Neofaculta ericetella m confirmed Dioryctria abietella f Satyr Pug f 18th county record, only third since 1996 Teleiodes vulgella f (worn dark grey) Caloptilia alchimiella m Nemapogon cloacella m Nemapogon ruricolella m â 4th county record Coleophore kuehnella m (the white one) Other Macro highlights were Cream-bordered Green Pea, 10+ Scarlet Tiger's, 5x Marbled Brown and Mere Wainscot. We finally finished packing up (which took over 2 hours) at 4am as it was getting light. Thanks guys for the help you gave me and adding to the list as we went through the night. An update on moths in the back garden Finally got round to posting a few recent catches and highlights. Best moth last week was a garden first Cydalima perspectalis and only the second example i've seen in this Country (the first being from last year's Herts Moth Group field trip to Rye Meads in August). Also 2 more Vestal, one on Monday night and one just last night (Which are different specimens which is nice), making it 5 in total for my garden over 5 years. Not much else to shout about really with Macro's... lots of November Moth aggs with a few to check for either Pale November or Autumnal Moth and a season first of Mottled Umber. On the Micro front an explosion of Acleris schalleriana with specimens turning up most nights and a high count of 6 on Wednesday night, also lots of Tachystola acroxantha, Emmelina monodactyla, Amblyptilia acanthdactyla and of course Epiphyas postvittana. What was nice to see was a dinky little Epermenia chaerophyllella, only the second record this year but one that has turned up every year apart from last year. Such an unusual looking species. The weather has been challenging to say the least. Either warm and windy or cold and clear and some mornings have been as cool as 4c. Below are the three catches.
