They are native to Hawaii, Pacific Basin excluding Hawaii, The Contiguous United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. Flowers are visited by Amegilla, Rhodanthidium septemdentatum, Carpenter bee, and Brachygastra lecheguana. Individuals can grow to 5.8 m.
