This species has a worldwide distribution. In Panama it has been collected in the Caribbean from Galeta Island (USNM E 36326), Naranjo Abajo Island, Minas Bay (USNM E 14580), South of Maria Soto (USNM 1011510, USNM 1114973, USNM 1011509; Centroid Latitude: 9.5233, Centroid Longitude: -79.6867 depth 1 m) and off Miria Island San Blas (USNM E 40091; beneath rocks and coral).

This species was found only on the reef, where it lives in coarse sand under coral rock.

Colour in life: deep red unlike Aldabra specimens which are green (Humphreys, 1981). Also recorded from 'Coin Peros' by Bell (1909) - locality can't be traced; SE Arabia, Maldive area, Ceylon, Bay of Bengal, East Indies, north Australia, Philippine, China, south Japan, South Pacific Is. and Hawaiian Is. (Clark & Rowe, 1971); Australia (Rowe & Gates, 1995); Marshall islands and Tuamotus (Clark, 1954); Lakshadweeo (India) in Sastry (1991). General distribution: from East Africa to Hawaii (Tortonese, 1980); tropical, Indo-Pacific Ocean, depth range 0-120 m. (Rowe & Gates, 1995); Western Atlantic and East coast of Africa to Hawaiian Islands (Sastry, 1991). Ecology: benthic, inshore, continental shelf, deposit feeder (Rowe & Gates, 1995).
