It is native to Puerto Rico, Espirito Santo, Amapá, Minas Gerais, Acre (Brazil), Pernambuco, Maranhao, Rondônia, Paraná, Ceará, Mata Atlântica, Tocantins, Roraima, São Paulo, Mato Grosso, Amazônia, Alagoas, Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, Pará, and Amazônia. It is a photoautotroph.
