Calandrina ciliata is highly variable vegetatively, especially in size, but is uniform in flower, fruit, and seed. It is very similar to C. breweri (see discussion above).

Stems prostrate to ascending, spreading, 3-40 cm. Leaf blades linear to oblanceolate, 1-10 cm, glabrous or with elongate, 1-cellular hairs. Flowers: sepals 2.5-8 mm; petals 4-15 mm; stamens 3-15; pedicel ± straight in fruit, 0.4-2.5 cm. Capsules usually not exceeding calyx by 3+ mm. Seeds 10-20, 1-2.5 mm wide, finely reticulate at 30×. 2n = 24.

Annual; stem branched at the base, decumbent or erect, 1-2 dm. high; leaves 3-6 cm. long; blades spatulate to linear-oblanceolate or the lower somewhat rhombic-oblanceolate, acute, more abruptly contracted into the petioles, usually ciliate on the margins and midrib; flowers axillary, the pedicels 5-10 mm. long; sepals ovate-lanceolate, 5-6 mm. or in fruit 6-8 mm. long, acuminate, ciliate on the margins; petals 5, red, obovate, 5-8 mm. long, only slightly exceeding the sepals; capsule ovoid, short-pointed, about equaling the sepals; stamens 5-8; seeds ovate-orbicular, black, shining, 1.5 mm. long.
Type locality': Northwest coast of America, south of the Columbia. Distribution: British Columbia to central California.
