They are native to Eastern North America, Italy, Sweden, Lithuania, Moldova, Azerbaijan, Romania, Switzerland, Armenia, Russia, Norway, Greece, France, Latvia, Ireland, Finland, Morocco, Algeria, Bulgaria, The Netherlands, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, Czech Republic, Belarus, Germany, Kazakhstan, Spain, Yugoslavia, Albania, Ukraine, Austria, Estonia, Tajikistan, Poland, Iran, Belgium, Hungary, and Denmark. They have simple, simple leaves. Individuals can grow to 3.6 m.
