The clamshell orchid, Prosthechea cochleata, is a medium sized, epiphytic New World orchid native to Central America, Colombia, the West Indies, and southern Florida.Variety P. c. cochleata is found everywhere except Florida, and has a single anther, as opposed to var. triandra, which has three anthers and lives exclusively in Florida.
Prosthechea cochleata cochleata is called the Black Orchid in Belize, where it is the national flower.
