Aggregations (10 or more) of these Copper Underwings (Amphipyra pyramidoides) were found under the bark of a standing dead maple. Most moved off when I pried the bark back to photograph them.Wagner et al., Owlet Caterpillars, say this is aggregation is common in this species in mid-summer before eggs are laid.
