Dactylorhiza lapponica ssp. rhaeticaLapland Marsh-orchid, DE: Rtische FingerwurzSlo.: laponska pasasta kukavicaDat.: June 10. 2015Lat.: 46.42545 Long.: 13.59906Code: Bot_885/2015_DSC7165Habitat: steep, northwest oriented slope above a road, loosely settled scree, sand and stones stabilized by iron mesh, sparsely overgrown; the place was wiped off all vegetation including trees a few years ago by a hudge rockslide; open, sunny place; calcareous bedrock; exposed to direct rain, elevation 1,150 m (3.800 feet), average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 4 -6 deg C, alpine phytogeographical region. Substratum: sandy soil.Place: Above the Mt. Mangart Alpine tool road, just after the bridge over 'Mangartski potok' stream, East Julian Alps, Posoje, Slovenia EC Comments: The place was full of wild orchids. More than 30 plants have been observed on June 6.. Most of them were recognized as Dactylorhiza majalis ssp. majalis although many plants showed large variability (for example lack of dark spots on the leaves). At the second visit of the place on June 10 some of the plants were recognized as Dactylorhiza lapponica (Ref.:1). As far as we know at the moment this is the first find of this species in the Upper Soa valley region.Protected according to 'Uredba o zavarovanih prostoiveih rastlinskih vrstah'Url. RS, t. 46/2004 (Regulation of protection of wild growing plants, Official Gazette of Republic Slovenia, No.:46/2004). Substratum: sandy, moist soil. Place: Koritnica valley, right bank of river Koritnica, upstream of Monica settlement, East Julian Alps, Posoje, Slovenia EC.Comment: One of the widely distributed and most common wild orchids in Slovenia is Dactylorhiza fuchsii ssp. fuchsii. It is a tall, stout plant with long, cylindrical inflorescence growing in all kind of habitats and type of ground, on wet as well as on quite dry places. This is probably also the reason of its great variability. Particularly colours and pattern of dots and lines on its flowers can vary widely. Its flowers have usually pink-purple appearance with intensely coloured darker lines and dots on them (see pictures no. 30-32). In alpine regions it is frequently even darker, sometimes almost dark purple-red or violet-red. Stalk, particularly at the top, is reddish and leaves are normally vigorously brown spotted. The plant shown on pictures 40-43 deviates from 'normal'. It is not a true albino completely without pigments but still noticeably lacks reddish pigments. Their flowers are almost white and less pronouncedly lined and spotted. Also the stem is not reddish and the spots on its leaves are barely seen. Literature states that even completely white flowering plants are not rare; such is the variability of this beautiful wild orchid.
