They are native to Amazônia, Roraima, The Contiguous United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, Mata Atlântica, and Puerto Rico. They have simple, broad leaves. Flowers are visited by soldier flies, Lerema accius, Cymaenes tripunctus, and Spicauda teleus. Individuals can grow to 1.7 m.
