They are native to China, Puerto Rico, The Contiguous United States, US Minor Outlying Islands, Pacific Basin excluding Hawaii, Hawaii, and U.S. Virgin Islands. They have loculicidal capsule fruit. Flowers are visited by Cheloninae, Siphona, Bactrocera cucurbitae, and chalcidid wasps. Individuals can grow to 4.4 m.
