SImilar to Scaphocalanus medius, but is characterized by larger sizes, longer A1 and 3 segments (as opposed to 2) in P5. Exopod of Mx1 with 8 setae (generally 4-7 setae in other species)

Oceanic, abyssopelagic species, found at depths of 800 to 4000 m.
Female: Head rounded, the fourth and fifth thoracic segments separate. The corners of the last thoracic segment are rounded and slightly indented on the dorsal side. Abdomen shorter almost 3 times shorter in length than the cephalothorax. Rostral filaments long and slender, of simple structure, separated at the base. A1 reach the middle of the abdomen. Genital segment slightly swollen laterally and 1.5 longer than the following segment. Caudal rami almost 2 times as long as wide and equal in length to the anal segment. The back edges of the abdominal segments are coarsely serrated. Exopodite of P1 with a short outer spine on the second segment, the first segment lacks a spine. P5 3-segmented, with 1 long apical spine, a short inner spine and a long inner chaeta on the the distal segment.
