“Stegocephaloides katalia, new species

Diagnosis : Accessory flagellum of antenna 1 as long as first article of primary flagellum; upper lip symmetrically incised; front edge of article 2 of peraeopod 5 longer than rest of appendage, article 2 reaching slightly beyond article 3, lower edge rounded, posterior edge sparsely serrated; third pleonal epimeron with posterior lower corner rounded, protruding slightly.

Holotype: L.G.O. No. 26, male, 4 mm., unique.

Type locality: Vema Station 18, Cape Basin, 4050 meters.

Relationship : This species differs from Stegocephaloides vanhoffeni Schellenberg (1926, p. 299) by smooth posterior edge of the third pleonal epimeron.

It differs from S. christianiensis (Boeck) and S. auratus Sars (both in Sars, 1895, Pl. 70) by rounded lower edge of article 2 on peraeopod 5.

It differs from S. australis K. H. Barnard (1916, p. 129) by the distinctive fifth peraeopod, which in australis has a relatively longer portion composed of articles 3-7 and has article 2 produced down to the end of article 4. Moreover, in S. australis the upper lip is asymmetrical; the accessory flagellum is only half as long as the first primary flagellar article; the rami of uropod 1 are equal; and there are other distinctive features.

It differs from S. attingens K. H. Barnard (1916, p. 131) by the fifth peraeopod in the same way as S. australis.
