Betula papyrifera, paper birch or American white birch. Maine, 28th November 2008, mixed coastal forest. The identification by Bob Andersen (thanks Bob) is tentative and I would welcome confirmation or correction. This is the birch that was used for the skins of canoes.

As its common name indicates, it is a riparian species often found near or along creeks and in moist areas.September 5, 2011, Wasatch Plateau, Huntington Canyon, along Huntingon Creek, northwestern corner of Emery County, Utah at approx. 7,185 ft. elev., spruce-fir community. This was a phenomenal water year and the creek was still at a fairly high water level despite the lateness of the year

Betula papyrifera. My first time seeing these trees in the wild. I also discovered their wood makes an excellent fire that burns for a long time.
