Juncus acutus ssp. leopoldiisouthwestern spiny rush. Included in the CNPS Inventory of Rare and Endangered Plants on list 4.2 (limited distribution). However, Australia considers J. acutus and its supspecies as invasive and the sharp points as dangerous to young children. Australian publications call the rush " tussocky." No matter its watch list status in California nor its invasive status in Australia, the rush is found on several of the Atlantic islands and in both South America and Africa. It's provenance in these locations is a matter of debate. Native Americans, of course, used this rush as well as most other rushes in basketry. The fruits shown here have mostly opened and spread there seed. They will persist on the plant for a long time. The plant is at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regiona Park near Berkeley, CA.
