Description: English: Asterionella formosa infected with Zygorhizidium planktonicum Upper right colonie of four cells is uninfected Lower left colonie of two cells is infected, the lower cell has four sporangia in different levels of maturity. In the upper left cornor is a free swimming zoospore of the fungus. Nederlands: Asterionella besmet met een schimmel. De kolonie rechts boven is niet besmet. De kolonie links onder heeft een cel met vier sporendoosjes. In de linker bovenhoek is een vrijzwemmende zoospoor. Date: 4 May 2009. Source: Own work. Author:

Cells are heteropolar with a triangular foot pole which narrows into a thin extension. Cells are connected by the valve faces of the foot poles into chains which are often star-shaped. A. glacialis can form extensive blooms. A. glacialis is a cosmpolitan species.
