Nostocaceae és una família de cianobacteris que forma colònies amb forma de filaments tancades dins d'una làmina mucosa o gelatinosa. Alguns gèneres es troben principalment en aigües dolces, com és el cas del gènere Nostoc, mentre d'altres es troben principalment en aigua salada (com el gènere Nodularia). Altres gèneres (p.e. Anabaena) es poden trobar tant en aigua dolça com salada.

Com altres cianobacteris, aquests bacteris de vegades contenen pigments fotosintètics en el seu citoplasma per a fer la fotosíntesi. Aquests pigments els donen un color verd blavenc.

Les espècies de Nostocaceae són conegudes per la seva capacitat de fixació del nitrogen i formen relacions de simbiosi amb certes plantes com les falgueres del gènere Azolla.

La família Nostocaceae pertany a l'ordre Nostocales. Els membres d'aquesta família es distingeixen d'altres famílies de l'ordre per tenir filaments sense embrancar i tenir heterocists.

Like other cyanobacteria, these bacteria sometimes contain photosynthetic pigments in their cytoplasm to perform photosynthesis. The particular pigments they contain gives the cells a bluish-green color.

Species of the Nostocaceae are particularly known for their nitrogen-fixing abilities, and they form symbiotic relationships with certain plants, such as the mosquito fern, cycads, and hornworts. The cyanobacteria provide nitrogen to their hosts. Certain species of Anabaena have been used on rice paddy fields. Mosquito ferns carrying the cyanobacteria grow on the water in the fields during the growing season. They and the nitrogen they contain are then plowed into the soil following the harvest, which has proved to be an effective natural fertilizer.

The family Nostocaceae belongs to the order Nostocales. Members of the family can be distinguished from those in other families by their unbranched filaments of cells arranged end-to-end, and development of heterocysts among the cells of the filaments.

Il Fat choy (Nostoc flagelliforme Harv. ex Molinari, Calvo-Pérez & Guiry), conosciuto anche con i nomi di faat choy, fa cai e muschio nero (cinese tradizionale: 髮菜; cinese semplificato: 发菜; pinyin: fàcài; jyutping: faat3 coi3; POJ Hokkien: thâu-mn̂g-chhài) è un cyanobatterio terrestre (un tipo di batterio fotosintetico) utilizzato come vegetale nella cucina cinese. Quando è essiccato, il prodotto ha le sembianze di capelli neri, per questo motivo il suo nome cinese significa letteralmente "verdura capelli". Quando viene reidratato, il batterio ha una consistenza soffice simile a dei vermicelli molto sottili.

Nostoc è un genere di cianobatteri azotofissatori di acqua dolce che formano colonie di filamenti, costituiti da cellule rotondeggianti avvolte in una massa gelatinosa.

Quando si trovano al suolo le colonie di Nostoc non vengono normalmente notate, mentre dopo una pioggia si ingrossano fino a diventare un ammasso gelatinoso.

I batteri di questo genere contengono pigmenti fotosintetici nel loro citoplasma e possono quindi effettuare la fotosintesi.

È detta anche Spuma di Primavera.
