Erect or scrambling glabrous shrubs with supra-axillary spiny modified lateral branchlets. Stipules shortly connate at base. Leaves opposite. Flowers solitary, supra-axillary, large, bisexual, 5-merous. Calyx tube cylindric; lobes small. Corolla trumpet-shaped, longitudinally ribbed; lobes contorted to the left. Ovary 1-locular. Style club-shaped. Fruit ± thin-walled with dark green longitudinal ribs and crowned by the persistent calyx. Seeds lenticular, the coat fibrous with a ± fingerprint-like pattern.
