Lives in rather deep water for such small species, specimens having been found as deep as 20 m, although they seem to prefer a range between 5 and 10 m. Always solitary. Omnivorous. Feeds on microorganisms and small fish (Ref. 6770). Aufwuchs eater (Ref. 54948). Forms temporary pair bonds; the male defends the territory while the female takes care of her offspring (Ref. 7343).

Telmatochromis temporalis is a species of cichlid endemic to Lake Tanganyika where they areas with rocky substrates usually at depths of from 5 to 10 metres (16 to 33 ft) though occasionally down to 20 metres (66 ft). This species can reach a length of 10.2 centimetres (4.0 in) TL. It can also be found in the aquarium trade.
