Model Basking SharkFrom: National Museum CardiffThe Basking Shark is the largest fish to live around the coastline of Britain. They can grow to 12m (38ft) in length and weigh up to 7 tonnes. The Basking Shark's name comes from its habit of floating motionless at the surface of the ocean, apparently basking in the sun. Although it is a shark, it does not have teeth; instead it feeds on vast amounts of tiny plankton, filtering 1,000 to 2,000 cubic metres of seawater per hour through its wide gaping mouth. The basking shark is recognised internationally as an endangered species.
