Cells truncate square-shaped, prismatical; laterally slightly indented, may have with horn-like cell wall extensions; cell posterior more or less indented, cell anterior slightly extended or tapered; twisted; papilla absent or present; 2 equal flagell; chloroplast cup-shaped or as a lateral plate; pyrenoid and eyspot present; contractile vacuoles two, anteriorly located; asexual reproduction by 2-8 zoospores, after release from the parental cell wall morphologically simpler than the mature cell; sexual reproduction isogamous; zygotes spherical with smooth or finely granular cell wall; palmelloid stages known.
