Macedonian Trout

Distinguished from all its congeners in Balkan Peninsula by the combination of the following characters: flank (especially the anterior part) and opercle with numerous large, ocellated, dark wine-red spots, sometimes blackish in middle (in Kadina basin; anterior ones covered by black pigments in Babuna and Dosnica basins); dorsal fin with some weak wine-red spots; and large individuals of over 30 cm SL with 3 broad black bars on posterior half of body, distinct only when stressed (Ref. 59043).

Inhabits stretches with swift water, rapids and small waterfalls (Ref. 59043).

Salmo macedonicus is a species of fish in the family Salmonidae. It is found only in rivers in the upper Vardar river basin in North Macedonia. It is threatened by habitat loss.

The taxonomic status of this fish is controversial.
