Alnus glutinosa (European alder) is a species of tree in the family Betulaceae. It has a self-supporting growth form. It is native to Ireland, Iran, Romania, Belarus, Turkey, Denmark, Norfolk Island, Germany, Kazakhstan, Tunisia, Poland, Sweden, Algeria, Norway, Morocco, Belgium, Yugoslavia, Russia, Switzerland, Ukraine, Hungary, Spain, the Netherlands, Albania, Italy, United Kingdom, France, Czech Republic, Austria, Bulgaria, Portugal, Finland, and Greece. It has simple, broad leaves and purple flowers. Alnus glutinosa (European alder) fixes nitrogen. It is a photoautotroph.
