It is native to Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Piauí, Mata Atlântica, Maranhao, Paraná, Acre (Brazil), Pampa, Alagoas, Sergipe, Rio de Janeiro, Amazônia, Espirito Santo, Ceará, Santa Catarina, Distrito Federal, Tocantins, Goiás, Amazônia, Cerrado, Amapá, Mato Grosso do Sul, Rondônia, São Paulo, Mato Grosso, Bahia, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Sul, Pará, Paraíba, Minas Gerais, Pantanal, Caatinga, and Roraima. Barbas De Indio has simple, broad leaves. It is a photoautotroph. Individuals can grow to 4 m.
