Substratum: soil.Place: Bovec basin, northeast part, near First World War cemetery, East Julian Alps, Posoje, Slovenia EC.Comment: Year after year I cannot resist photographing this very common but also very beautiful plant. It grows in fields of hundreds and thousands flowers here around. With its tenderness, freshness and elegant simplicity one cannot imagine a better symbol and promise of coming spring time. Its beauty seems to me a derision and revolt against the basic physical law of all material - entropy. What a surplus over bare biological functionality no matter how complex it may be! What an unreasonable abundance and richness is conveyed in these flower fields!Ref.:(1) M.A. Fischer, W. Adler, K. Galanthus nivalis (or a closely related cultivar), introduced from Europe. In order to show details of the normally nodding, pendulous flowers, a flower was positioned on a Creeping Oregon grape leaf present at the site. Solitary flowers have six tepals, the outer three much larger than the inner three (which are notched and green at the apex), and have six stamens. Plants have flat leaves.3/14/2013, vicinity of Knudsen's Corner, open space, growing under Quercus gambelii and with Berberis repens (possibly a cultivar), approx. 4,580 ft. elev.

2010.03.07 Austria,Lower Austria, district Schwechat, 158 m AMSL (Harte Au - broadleaf forest).First leaf shoots come out late in february or in march (they're a delicacy of local cuisine), and where they grow in huge numbers their smell of garlic literally hangs in the air. This year there are at this time only a very few specimens with fully enfolded leaves like that one, but there are plenty of smaller shoots and they'll very shortly cover the soil almost completely, at this place.Begins to flower only in april/may.(Also in this picture: Galanthus nivalis, young shoots with buds.)Very common in wet broadleaf forests.German name: Br-Lauch (and Schneeglckchen)
